Module 1: Overview of NYS CSE Program

Interstate Cases: The Uniform Interstate Family Support Act (UIFSA)

Each state should provide the same services for both custodial and non-custodial parents that include:

  • location activities
  • paternity establishment
  • support establishment
  • support collection
  • support enforcement
  • modification of a support order

Since states have different ways of managing Child Support Enforcement programs, there is a law that provides procedures for establishing and enforcing child support obligations in interstate cases.

The Uniform Interstate Family Support Act (UIFSA) is the primary law that governs interstate cases. It ensures that CSE units in different states carry out child support services in an equal manner.
