Module 1: Overview of NYS CSE Program

Support Enforcement: Administrative Enforcement

Passport Denial

What Happens?

New York State works with the U.S. State Department to prevent non-custodial parents from obtaining or renewing their passports.

Why it Happens?

An account is selected if the past due amount is equal to or greater than $5,000.

See example below

Robert

Example: cannot renew passport until child support is paid

Robert is a salesman who has been working in China for six months and hasn't paid his child support. When it is time for him to return to the United States, he finds his passport has expired and the U.S. State Department won't renew it since he owes $6,300 in past due support. Robert pays what he owes so he can return home.
