Module 1: Overview of NYS CSE Program

Support Enforcement: Administrative Enforcement

Lottery Prize Intercept

What Happens?

NYS lottery winnings are taken to pay for overdue child support.

Why it Happens?

A child support account that is past due for $50 or more is eligible if the prize money is equal to or greater than $600.

See example below

Office workers celebrating at a pub

Example: child support payment is deducted from lottery winning

A group of office workers pool their money to buy a lottery ticket and win $5,000. One of the workers, James, who bought the ticket for the group, turns it in to collect the winnings. But, because James owes $8,400 in child support, and the prize is greater than $600, the money is taken to pay his past due child support. The group gets nothing but, his children received $5,000.
