New York State's Child Support Enforcement program was established as required by law under the Title IV-D of the United States Social Security Act.
Child Support Responsibilities of Every State
In 1975, Congress passed a federal law known as Title IV-D of the United States Social Security Act. This law required every state to:
- Establish and maintain statewide child support enforcement laws
- Provide procedures for establishing paternity and obtaining support orders
- Collect and enforce child support
In New York State, child support services are provided by CSE and Support Collection Units (SCU) in county and in New York City offices .
