Safe Sleeping Practices for Infants and Young Children

Video conference screen shot of baby sleeping

Program Description

This videoconference will illustrate the importance of safe sleeping environments for infants and young children. It will provide an understanding of the nature of child fatalities, the risks associated with sleeping environments, and effective strategies for conveying child safety information to help reduce the growing number of infant deaths reported to OCFS. Dr. Jennifer Canter, a board certified child abuse pediatrician, will discuss her role on a child fatality review team and provide recommendations for safe sleep environments. Other panelists will present the experiences and challenges parents and caseworkers face and will offer recommended alternatives for discussing safe sleep environments with parents. Building relationships with families provides opportunities for those 'teachable moments' to convey important child safety information.
