Essential Skills for Working with LGBTQ Youth in Out-of-Home Care

Program Description

This TrainingSpace Course is a recording of a teleconference previously broadcast on 9/28/10. The Office of Children and Family Services has established standards that promote a safe and respectful environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth in out of home placements . As indicated in 09-OCFS-INF-06, Practice Guidelines for Promoting a Safe and Respectful Environment for LGBTQ Youth, approximately 5 to 10 % of the general population is lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. LGBTQ youth are estimated to comprise an even higher, disproportionate share of the child welfare and juvenile justice systems. Some youth are in care solely as a result of their LGBTQ identify. This teleconference will clearly articulate OCFS practice standards and expectations, as well as offer practical guidance and skills for staff working with this population.
