Advanced Medical Issues: Tourette Syndrome and Associated Disorders
Program Description
This TrainingSpace Course is a recording of a teleconference previously broadcast on 11/17/09. The purpose of this teleconference is to enhance casework assessment skills regarding Tourette Syndrome (TS) and other commonly associated disorders. Topic areas to be covered include: What is TS and what can lead families afflicted with TS to CPS; Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, ADHD and their co-morbidity with TS; learning disabilities most frequently seen with TS and how TS and its associated disorders affect behavior. As a result of participating in the teleconference, trainees will be able to: better assess safety and risk by gaining a better understanding between the neurological disabilities of TS and other associated disorders and child abuse and neglect; identify the criteria for diagnosis and the observable manifestations of TS; assess the impact of these disorders on education, social, emotional functioning and family interaction and identify strategies for working with children with TS in a variety of settings and understand the effect these disorders have on behavior.
Presenter
Ms. Sue Conners, MA, Ed. is a nationally renowned speaker and advocate for all children. She was a contributor to the Emmy Award winning documentary I Have Tourette's but Tourette's Doesn't Have Me. Ms. Conners has also been featured on and contributed to WABC's TV news magazine 20/20 documentary on Tourette's. She is sought after for her unique and extensive knowledge about the challenges that this disorder and other disabilities may present to children, families, educational systems as well as child welfare systems.

Target audience is experienced child welfare and CPS staff, senior caseworkers, supervisors and directors of service.
