Recruiting and Retaining African American and Hispanic F/A Families
Program Description
This TrainingSpace Course is a recording of a teleconference previously broadcast on 8/9/10. Under the federal Multiethnic Placement Act (MEPA), states and counties are required to maintain a pool of eligible foster and adoptive parents that reflect the diverse ethnic and racial mix of youth in out-of-home care. These important regulations help determine how and who we engage and recruit as potential foster and adoptive parents in our communities. Recruiting across cultural and ethnic lines requires caseworkers and administrators to have sensitivity and an understanding of cultural and racial norms.
The objectives of this teleconference are to:
- Provide an understanding of the impact of differences in color, ethnicity and race on an agency's efforts to engage, recruit and retain African American and Hispanic American foster/adoptive families
- Discuss specific strategies for engaging, recruiting, and retaining African American and Hispanic American foster/adoptive families
- Review the provisions of the Multiethnic Placement Act (MEPA) as they apply to recruiting and retaining African American and Hispanic American foster/adoptive families
This program will include presentations from staff of the National Resource Center for Recruitment and Retention of Foster and Adoptive Parents at AdoptUsKids.
Target Audience
- Local district and voluntary agency administrative staff and casework and homefinding staff in foster/care adoption should attend.
